S&P Dow Jones Indices, Korea
have launched an index measuring firms by how much carbon they emit – an example of continued moves around “green” energy.

The index excludes firms that are deemed to emit too much carbon and don’t disclose enough data on emissions. The new entity is called the S&P/KRX Carbon Efficient Capped Index.

The index aims to reflect the South Korean government’s move to a low-carbon economy through its Green New Deal initiative. The initiative aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 for the country. The index has 483 constituents at the moment, accounting for 90 per cent of the S&P Korea BMI’s total market capitalisation, S&PDJI and Korea Exchange said in a statement yesterday.
