Sotheby's Makes A Splash Opening Its First Wine Store In Hong Kong

Sotheby’s has unveiled its first wine store in Hong Kong and no expense has been spared with a 12-litre bottle of Haut-Brion 2000 that costs HK$280,000 ($36,124) up for sale to those who can afford it.

Sotheby’s has unveiled its first wine store in Hong Kong and no expense has been spared with  a 12-litre bottle of Haut-Brion 2000 that costs HK$280,000 ($36,124) up for sale to those who can afford it.

The auction house is offering 700 different wines ranging from the very high end to the "reasonably-priced" Château Barreyre 2010 at HK$148 per bottle.

Hong Kong has been a important market for Sotheby's of late with the company auctioning HK$1.4 billion ($184 million) of wines over the past four years.

"Hong Kong is the most exciting and dynamic wine market in the world, serving not only those who live in Hong Kong, but wine buyers throughout Asia," said Jamie Ritchie, Sotheby's wine chief executive and president for the Americas & Asia.

The store is based in Sotheby’s Hong Kong Gallery on the 5th floor of One Pacific Place.

Hong Kong catapulted into the top position of wine auction market after scrapping import duties on wine in 2008. Since then wine auctioneers Acker Merrall & Condit, Zachys as well as Bonhams auction house have held regular sales in Hong Kong, which also has no retail taxes.
