Scandal-Warped Prime Minister Visits White House, Avoids 1MDB Chats

The two leaders met earlier this week.

US President Donald Trump recently met with Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak and praised his country for investing in the US but steered clear of talks around global probes into a Malaysian corruption scandal.

The visit was important for Najib as he faces elections next year and sought to prove he was still welcome at the White House despite a criminal investigation by the US Department of Justice into a state-owned investment fund which he founded.

Najib told Trump that Malaysia Airlines would buy 25 Boeing 737 jets and eight 787 Dreamliners, and would likely add another 25 737s in the near future in a deal he said would be worth more than $10 billion within five years.

The prime minister also said that Malaysia’s Employees Provident Fund, a major pension fund, wanted to spend between $3 billion and $4 billion on US infrastructure development.

Najib enjoyed close ties with former US President Barack Obama, but relations cooled over human rights-related issues and the scandal at 1Malaysia Development Berhad,  which is currently the subject of investigations in at least six countries including the US, Singapore and Swizterland. Najib has consistently denied any wrongdoing in relation to 1MDB

The US DoJ has alleged that some $4.5 billion was misappropriated from 1MDB by Malaysian official and their associates.
