Japan’s SuMi TRUST Targets Singapore

Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Asset Management’s (SuMi TRUST AM), a large Japanese investment house, opens new office in Singapore.

Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Asset Management (SuMi TRUST AM) has announced that its new Singapore subsidiary Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Asset Management Singapore Private Limited (SuMiTAMS) started its operations in July 2025.

The move comes amid growing interest from Asian institutional investors and family offices in Japanese equities, the firm said in a statement. In the premier financial centre of Singapore, the new office aims to capitalise on trends in the region.

RBC Wealth Management also holds a constructive view on the Japanese equity market.

SuMiTAMS said it plans to build relationships with regional stakeholders by offering investment solutions. The team will initially comprise six investment and sales specialists who will provide investment research and client service, with a focus on institutional investors across Southeast Asia and the Pacific. Takeshi Narita will lead the team as CEO of SuMiTAMS, the firm added.

Takeshi has 33 years of experience in the industry. He first joined Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank in 1992 and moved across to SuMi TRUST Asset Management (the Trust Bank’s sister company) in 2019. He has worked in Singapore since 2022.

“Having boots on the ground in Singapore means we can offer local investors access to our quality global network of client-focused services,” Yoshio Hishida, CEO of SuMi TRUST said. “Through SuMiTAMS, we will be able to serve new clients and build closer relationships with existing customers by leveraging our strength in providing tailor-made solutions.”

SuMi TRUST AM has subsidiary entities in Europe (London) and North America (New York), but the Singapore location will be its first in Asia. This is the latest step in the firm’s global strategy after its addition of an office in Luxembourg. See more commentary about the firm here.

Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Asset Management (SuMi TRUST AM) is an asset management firm with Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Group (SuMi TRUST), and is one of the largest asset managers in Japan with $713 billion assets under management as of the end of May 2025.
