Hong Kong Regulator Sounds Alert Over Another Internet Scam

Another bank has been the victim of scammers issuing a fake address purporting to be that of a genuine firm, according to Hong Kong’s financial regulator, adding to a string of such alerts in recent months.

Another bank has been the victim of scammers issuing a fake address purporting to be that of a genuine firm, according to Hong Kong’s financial regulator, adding to a string of such alerts in recent months.

“The Hong Kong Monetary Authority wishes to alert members of the public to a fraudulent website with the domain name "http://hsplbk.com/bank.hangseng.com/1/2/personal/private-banking/private-banking.html".  The website purports to be the official website of Hang Seng Bank, Limited (HSB).  HSB has clarified that it has no connection with the fraudulent website,” the regulator said in a statement last Friday.

The HKMA said persons who have provided information to the website or who  conducted any financial transactions through the website should contact Hang Seng Bank at 2822 0228 and any local Police Station or the Commercial Crime Bureau of the Hong Kong Police Force at 2860 5012.

A number of warnings have been issued about such fakes websites. In December last year, Bank of East Asia, or BEA, warned the people receiving emails about LinkedIn profiles of two of its senior figures that they were fraudulent.
