Hong Kong Bank Warns Of Fake Item Appearing In Internet Account Login

The Hong Kong-based bank has warned of a fake item appearing during client bank logins that is seeking to grab personal data, addding to a number of warnings by firms over such developments as fake websites.

Bank of China (Hong Kong) has alerted clients and the wider public about a fake pop-up window that appears during the personal internet banking login, adding to a run of warnings by banks in the region about fake websites and other Internet-related skulduggery.

The fake pop-up window requests customers to enter credit card information such as card number, expiry date and the card verification code, BOCHK said in a statement. The bank has reported the case to the Hong Kong Monetary Authority and the Hong Kong police force.

BOCHK’s Internet banking login process does not require customers to enter any credit card information or other personal data, including but not limited to Hong Kong identity card number, date of birth, or other such details.

Customers who discover any unauthorised transactions in their bank accounts or have any query relating to Internet banking service should call BOCHK customer service hotlines (852) 3988 2388 (personal customers)/(852) 3988 2288 (corporate customers).

A number of Asia-based banks have warned about fake websites in recent months, coming at a time of heightened concerns about cybercrime and the potential threat to bank accounts and financial services more generally.
