HSBC Private Banking Makes Major Asia UHNW Appointment

The private bank is making hundreds of hires and investing $100 million as part of a build-out of its Asia operations.

HSBC Private Banking has appointed Jackie Mau to the new role of regional head of ultra-high net worth, Asia-Pacific.

The bank said the hire comes against a background of its "renewed focus on the UHNW segment" as part of its "significant growth ambitions in the region". HSBC said it is "investing considerably" to grow its Asian private banking business, hiring for 700 roles over five years until the end of 2022 and investing $100 million in digital and technology over 2019 and 2020.

Mau, based in Hong Kong, will be responsible for leading growth of the UHNW business in Asia and will report to Siew Meng Tan, regional head of HSBC Private Banking, Asia-Pacific.

With more than 20 years' financial markets experience, Mau joined HSBC in 2003 and has been in a number of senior client-facing roles across investment banking and private banking in Hong Kong and Thailand. Most recently, he was co-head of investment services and product solutions, Asia-Pacific for HSBC Private Banking. Prior to that, he was regional head of investment counselling, Asia-Pacific.

Following 18 months as co-head with Jackie Mau, Abdel Ben Tkhayet has been appointed head of ISPS, Asia-Pacific. Abdel Ben Tkhayet will take sole responsibility for leading the products and investment counsellor teams in the region and will continue to focus on driving the development of products and investment solutions for clients in Asia. He joined HSBC in 1997 and has over 20 years’ international banking experience having worked in France, the UAE, the UK and Hong Kong.

He has had a wide variety of senior roles in both the private bank and global banking and markets. Prior to his current role, Abdel Ben Tkhayet was head of FICC and equities, Asia-Pacific for private banking. He  will continue to report to Stuart Parkinson, chief investment officer.

“Since renewing our strategic focus on the UHNW segment, clients are already seeing the benefits of a new coverage model, new solutions specialists and segment management teams, and an enhanced product set for sophisticated needs," Siew Meng Tan, regional head of HSBC Private Banking, Asia Pacific, said.
