Barclays Global Investors has hired Michael Crowl as global general counsel. In this role, he will oversee the global divisions of legal and compliance and be a member of the Barclays group legal executive committee. He will be based in San Francisco reporting to Rohit Bhagat, global chief operating officer for BGI, and Mark Harding, group general counsel for Barclays PLC.

Mr Crowl joins from Goldman Sachs, where most recently he was a managing director and global general counsel, investment banking.

He succeeds Joanne Medero, who served for more than 10 years. Ms Medero now works as head of government relations and public policy for the investment banking and investment management divisions of Barclays.
